US Embassy donates military equipment to MDF

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General Paul Velentino Phiri has said the donation of explosive ordinance disposable equipment, armoury tools and a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop will help enhance the safety and security of communities.

The donation, by a humanitarian non-governmental organisation The Halo Trust through the United States Embassy, was made at Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

“The explosive ordinance equipment and the armoury tools are vital additions to our resources as handling explosive devices requires precision, expertise and the right equipment,” said Velentino Phiri.

He said the Land Cruiser Hardtop will be turned into an ambulance.

The Halo Trust programme manager Chris Pym said the donation is a culmination of collaboration between his organisation and the MDF.

“Our project here is supported by the US Government who first observed a requirement for support when it came to safe storage of equipment and weapons. That was back in 2017,” he said.

The Halo Trust (Hazardous Area Life-support Organisation) primarily works to clear landmines and other explosive devices left behind during conflicts.

Its global headquarters are in the United Kingdom, but it also has offices in Washington, D.C., United States and The Hague, The Netherlands.
